Tommy Shenefield (he/him) is a community media practitioner and multimedia artist dedicated to uplifting artists and activists. As the Assistant Manager for WBCA 102.9 FM, he interviews local musicians, hosts live event coverage, and teaches Bostonians from ages 11-91 to share their voices with the city through community broadcasting. Tommy also builds partnerships with nonprofits and universities, including an ongoing collaboration with MassArt’s Make Radio course. Currently serving on the board of the Foundation of the Alliance for Community Media, he is part of the movement towards a sustainable future for hyperlocal arts, entertainment, and journalism. Tommy’s own work in film, radio, and TV has been recognized by the International Student Broadcasting Championship, the National Film Festival for Talented Youth, and the Alliance for Community Media. His film and visual art have been exhibited in Massachusetts, New York, Maine, and Washington. He also designs print and motion graphics, writes poetry, and performs live projection art.
Advice to Students:
While at Vassar and after you graduate, go to events, talk to people, and try new things—even if you’re not sure they exactly align with your interests. You never know when you might stumble upon something or someone that makes you reimagine your possible futures. To paraphrase Amitava Kumar, try to get rejected at least once a week. Apply for any and all opportunities that catch your eye, and try to have faith that the right things will find you. And take advantage of the Center for Career Education! They host great events and are always happy to offer guidance. Whatever you find yourself doing for an income, if you want to make art, don’t stop!
