Raymond Magsaysay is a lawyer and legal scholar. An associate at Hueston Hennigan, his practice focuses on trials and bet-the-company litigation. Previously, he clerked for Judge Jacqueline Nguyen of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Justice Goodwin Liu of the Supreme Court of California. He also previously represented clients in billion-dollar government contract disputes and white collar investigations at Latham & Watkins. Raymond’s scholarship, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and the Prison Industrial Complex, has been widely cited, including by the Supreme Court of California. He has presented on the topic at various forums. During law school, Raymond worked in the DOJ Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section and defended indigent clients with the Defender Association of Philadelphia. Before becoming a lawyer, he was a Fulbright Scholar and professor in Madrid. He has also taught elementary school and organized labor, passions that began at Vassar. He is fluent in Filipino and Spanish.

Advice to Students: 

Cherish the education and community Vassar provides. I can confidently say that I have not experienced a more critical, challenging, and supportive learning environment than the one I found at Vassar. Everything I learned in my classes has been transferable to my legal practice, teaching experience, and life itself. The same goes for the community I built at Vassar. To this day, my biggest cheerleaders include members of my fellow group and the Transitions program, as well as various professors and mentors I met at Vassar. And to this day, they also remain among the most beloved people in my life.
