Lee Ann Bael (she/her) is a Program Associate on the National Democratic Institute’s (NDI) Middle East and North Africa team, primarily assisting the Tunisia and Yemen portfolios. From NDI’s headquarters in DC, she provides programmatic and operations support to assist with the implementation of projects that promote government transparency and free and fair access to democratic processes. Prior to joining NDI, Lee Ann was a policy analyst at The Council Oak, an environmental policy consulting firm. During her time at Vassar, Lee Ann worked with the Hudson City Government, interned with Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, and was an immigration legal assistant. At Vassar, Lee Ann was a member of the Vassar Alliance for Women in Foreign Affairs and a contributing researcher with Vassar Refugee Solidarity’s Consortium on Forced Migration.

Advice to Students:

As frustrating as they can be to write, don’t underestimate the value of a well-crafted cover letter. When applying for jobs, go for what you find interesting and then use your cover letter to sell your experiences. It’s not about matching every item in the job listing, but what you bring to the table can help you get your foot in the door.
