Emily Ludolph (she/her) is an editor at McKinsey & Company where she works on executive communications and writes for the firm’s internal newsletter. During the media boom of the 2010s, she wrote for publications like The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Airmail and worked on storytelling and launch strategy for clients like the Steve Jobs Archive, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, the Hamilton: An American Musical team, design giants, tech companies, and hedge funds. Her first job was at TED Conferences, helping to shepherd business talks to the TED stage. She is a Rockefeller Resilience Fellow at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and an IFP Audio Story Lab Fellow. She is just as happy to talk about making crosswords, pottery, and a podcast she once made about book dedications as she is to talk about writing.
Advice to Students:
A Vassar alum gave me a piece of advice that turned out to be career-shaping, so I’m passing it along. Find a role as an assistant to a high-powered executive. You’ll learn how they schedule their days, how they run meetings (and with who), how they build and manage relationships. You’ll be a fly on the wall in important rooms that you won’t get back into until you’re an executive yourself. Nearly all the intangibles of how I do business today, I learned from that job.
