Janou Hooykaas (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker working in a community health clinic that is part of the New York City public hospital system. She offers both individual and group psychotherapy and specializes in working with adolescents and young adults, LGBTQ+ populations, and people with substance use disorders. She primarily works with underserved individuals and is passionate about patient advocacy and recognizing social determinants of health as a factor in mental healthcare. She received her master’s degree in social work with a focus on gender and sexuality in 2021 at Hunter College and underwent clinical training in a substance use treatment facility and LGBTQ+ youth center. Outside of work, Janou practices Zen meditation with a Brooklyn-based sangha and has recently picked up salsa dancing.

Take a few classes based on the best professor you hear about, regardless of department or class! And be fearless about reaching out for networking opportunities, especially informational interviews.
