Lucy Funes (she/her) is a research technician in the Maxfield Lab at Weill Cornell Medicine. Her research focuses on investigating microglial lysosome function in clearing amyloid-beta plaque fibrils, the latter being one of many proteins that accumulate in cases of Alzheimer’s Disease. During her time at Vassar, Lucy worked in Professor Colin Aitken’s lab for three years, in which she investigated the mechanistic underpinnings of eukaryotic initiation factor 3 (eIF3), and developed the research skills that have been integral in helping her grow as a scientist. Lucy is currently applying to doctorate programs in the neuroscience field, and her future research will focus on improving understanding and treatment of Late Onset Alzheimer’s Disease with the overall goal of improving quality of life for those afflicted by the disease.
Advice to Students:
Always be open to talking about your interests! You never know who you’ll meet! Sometimes a conversation about your future goals may lead to a job offer or being introduced to someone in your field of interest! Along the same lines, keep in touch with your Vassar community! Friends, classmates, professors, etc., can make all the difference in your trajectory, and even show you opportunities you hadn’t known existed.
